Ms. Jana Ortiz

Art Teacher

My midwestern community and family truly contributed to and shaped my ideals about learning. I come from an extensive lineage of teachers, who embraced hard work, perseverance, and flexibility in a constantly changing world. These individuals made a profound impact on my educational experience and through them I saw the importance of meeting students “where they are.” My parents instilled a united belief in higher education and a “positive growth mindset” for me, even with Dyslexia.

My art teacher influenced me when he gave me opportunities to experience the world around me through art. His constant dedication to lifting me up resonated with me and I felt empowered. He never judged or condemned me for being an untraditional learner. Rather, he encouraged my style and taught me in a way in which I could relate. When I wanted to quit, he and my parents helped me continue to love learning and together really changed my life. I was given the opportunity to assist my art teacher during the summer arts program for kids. This experience impacted my decision to go into teaching and attend Northern Illinois University where both parents were alumni. My father used to say, “Teaching is an art and knowledge is power which no one can take away from you.” I believed him and realized I wanted to be just like my wonderful teachers. My passion is to impart knowledge, instill a love for learning, and be a positive influence for future generations through art.

I feel fortunate to have taught art to elementary and middle school students for nearly 25 years and believe that arts education fosters creativity, critical thinking, leadership, and lifelong learning. Many of my former students are now young adults connecting to the world through various art careers. I enjoy seeing them in different workplaces, and love that they’re pursuing their professional dreams.

Early on in my career, I had the privilege of co-creating a new Visual and Performing Arts K-8 curriculum for the Elizabeth Public School District with two distinguished colleagues. This visual arts curriculum remained the gold standard for our district for thirteen years and provided resources and guidance to many art educators and students!

Throughout the years, I have mentored nine art education students from Kean and Montclair State University. One of my interns recently filled my original school position. My current intern is one of my former first graders. All my interns have special places in my heart, of course, but this one was different – she was my student when she was only six years old. In May, she graduates, and it’s truly exciting to be a part of her educational journey! My commitment to nurturing the next generation builds on the legacy of teachers before me and serves to continue the profound and lasting impact that I and all of us have had on the lives of our students: a dream realized.
