Ms. Lena Calle

First Grade Teacher

As the daughter of immigrants, who came to this country in search of a better life and only spoke Spanish, I struggled academically as a child. I was the only Hispanic student in my elementary school and did not have access to any resources that could help me. Speaking only Spanish at home, my parents wanted to ensure I would be truly bilingual. I remember how I felt while I struggled in school and the impact my teachers made. It was through this experience that I began to aspire to be a teacher. I hoped that one day I too could have a positive impact on student lives and help those who struggle like I did. It is truly motivating to now be able to help bridge the gap between school and my students’ families. I am dedicated to pushing my students to reach their full potential and grow to love learning. My upbringing and life experiences have shaped me into the teacher I am today.

Every child is capable of learning and every child matters. As teachers, I believe we play an important role in the lives of our students. We can greatly impact our students’ view on the importance of their education. I strive to get to know my students, knowing that each child is unique and has different needs. I establish a cooperative relationship with students’ families, letting them know I am here to work with them to provide their child the best first grade learning experience possible. I believe ensuring parental involvement in our students’ lives positively impacts their education. Creating a meaningful connection with my students is important to ensure their academic success and their desire to learn. Knowing my students’ individual strengths and weaknesses allows me to prepare each lesson, ensuring each child is involved at their level of understanding. I try to facilitate students creating real world connections, so they see the importance of education in their own lives and become lifelong learners.
