First Grade Teacher
While in college, I worked as a secretary in the medical records department of a hospital. While I was good at it, I knew that an office job wasn’t for me. I loved the idea of working with children and helping them learn and reach their full potential, which is what prompted my decision to pursue a degree in education.
I think that an outstanding teacher is someone who meets the needs of his or her students, both academically and emotionally. He or she is engaging, compassionate and patient. An outstanding teacher fosters an environment where students feel safe to make mistakes, share ideas, and explore. Throughout my career, I have strived to embody these qualities the best that I can. I have tried to demonstrate real world connections for my first graders to help them see how the fundamental skills of reading, writing, math, and science go beyond the classroom and are used and useful in everyday life.

One of the primary factors that influenced me to become a special education paraprofessional was my personal experience with individuals with special needs. Whether it was a family member or a friend, interacting with individuals who require additional support and assistance opened my eyes to the challenges they face on a daily basis. These experiences inspired me to pursue a career where I could provide meaningful support and make a positive impact on the lives of students with special needs. It shaped my perspective and instilled a passion for helping others in a way that is both impactful. Another factor that influenced me to become a special education paraprofessional is my deep-seated passion for helping others. I have always been drawn to professions that allow me to support and empower individuals who may face challenges or barriers to success. Working as a special education paraprofessional provides me with the opportunity to make a meaningful difference in the lives of students with special needs by providing them with the support, encouragement, and resources they need to thrive academically and socially.
As a special education paraprofessional, we play a crucial role in supporting students with special needs in their academic and personal growth. This role requires a unique set of skills, qualities, and expectations to effectively assist students in achieving their full potential. Understanding and meeting these expectations is essential for creating a positive and inclusive learning environment for our students needs. I feel that I play a vital role promoting student success in school through academic support, emotional guidance, and behavior management skills by helping students overcome challenges, achieve their academic goals, and thrive in the classroom.
