Students at School No. 51 observed Read Across America Week commemorating some of Dr. Seuss’ wonderful books. This nationwide event is designed to promote literacy among young children during the week of February 26th – March 2, 2018. During this celebration, our students participated in various activities that fostered cognitive, language, and social and emotional development. Our celebration began with a visit from the Cat in the Hat. Students created birthday cards for Dr. Seuss in the classroom and later displayed them on the windows facing the garden. We encouraged parents to participate in their children’s learning by inviting them to help their child create birthday cards for Dr. Seuss at home. The projects were later displayed throughout the school. Students were also treated to green eggs and ham for breakfast and encouraged to wear green in honor of Dr. Seuss’ book Green Eggs and Ham. Staff members and students wore silly socks and crazy hats in honor of Dr. Seuss’ books Fox in Socks and The Cat in the Hat. Our PTO participated in the event by hosting their annual Scholastic Book Fair on February 28th, March 1st & March 2nd. On February 28th., Trooper Cruz was a guest reader in several classrooms honoring Dr. Seuss’ tongue twisters and silly alliteration stories. On March 1st., Elizabeth Board of Education member Mr. Jerry Jacobs joined in commemorating Dr. Seuss’ wonderful books by reading the story Green Eggs and Ham to the students in Mrs. Smith’s class. We ended the celebration by wearing pajamas for Reading Under the Stars. Books were read using flashlights as shooting stars flew over student’s heads. This event was an opportunity to gather the parents, students and teachers in an environment which fosters a love of reading.
